How Surrogacy Has Evolved Over the Past Three Decades

As we celebrate our 35th anniversary at SPS, it’s amazing to reflect on how far surrogacy has come since our founding in 1990. Today, surrogacy is more hopeful, supportive, and successful for intended parents and surrogates alike. Read on to learn about the remarkable changes we’ve witnessed over the past three and a half decades!

Improved success rates and scientific advancements

One of the biggest changes in surrogacy is the improvement in success rates. In the past, multiple embryos were often transferred to increase the chances of pregnancy. Today, thanks to better technology, we usually transfer just one embryo, which is safer and just as effective.

Science has also advanced significantly. Genetic testing has become more sophisticated, allowing for better screening of embryos and increasing the likelihood of a healthy pregnancy. These advancements have not only improved success rates, but have also made the process safer for both surrogates and babies.

More support for surrogates

Today, surrogates receive more comprehensive support than ever before. At SPS, we’ve always prioritized the well-being of our surrogates, but today we’re able to offer even more personalized care. Surrogates now have access to a team of professionals, including dietitians and licensed mental health experts, to ensure their health and comfort throughout the journey.

Society’s view of surrogacy has also shifted in a positive direction. As people gain a better understanding of surrogacy, they become more supportive of both surrogates and intended parents. This acceptance has helped create an environment where surrogates feel valued and celebrated for their incredible role in building families.

Fairer compensation

Over time, surrogate compensation has become more reflective of the time, effort, and dedication required for this incredible act of selflessness. At SPS, we’re proud to offer one of the most competitive benefits packages in California, with base compensation starting at $65,000 for first-time surrogates. This compensation, along with additional benefits, acknowledges the profound commitment surrogates make to help others build their families.

Legal protections in California

California has long been at the forefront of surrogacy-friendly legislation, and the laws have only improved over time. In 2013, a new statute clarified the legal process for gestational surrogacy, providing more security for all parties involved. These laws ensure that intended parents’ rights are protected and surrogates are treated fairly throughout the process.

The shift to gestational surrogacy

One of the most significant changes in surrogacy has been the move away from traditional surrogacy towards gestational surrogacy. At SPS, we only work with gestational carriers, meaning there’s no genetic connection between the surrogate and the baby.

This shift has simplified the legal process and reduced potential emotional complications, making the surrogacy journey clearer and more straightforward for everyone involved.

As we look back on 35 years of helping build families through surrogacy, we’re so grateful for how far we’ve come.

These advancements have made surrogacy safer, more successful, and more rewarding than ever before. We’re excited to continue being at the forefront of this incredible field, supporting surrogates and intended parents as they embark on this beautiful journey!
